Sound above Sound: Piano Music from Black America explores the Black American experience through the works of some of the 20th and 21st century’s most exciting composers. Inspired by Mari Evans’ poem ‘Who can be Black?’ and bookended by virtuosic interpretations of Black spirituals by Florence B. Price and Margaret Bonds, the program presents jazz masterpieces by Duke Ellington and Valerie Capers; poetry-driven, mixed-media explorations by Brittany J. Green; and celebrations of African music traditions by Fred Onovwerosuoke. These composers fête the cultures of the African diaspora, painting vivid portraits of their communities while provoking a long overdue re-assessment of the classical canon.
