Join the Yale Club of Washington, D.C. for a performance by Yale Alumni celebrating the works of great women composers, including a world premier composition!  These pieces are rare gems, and there are hardly any official recordings of them. We are truly honored to rediscover some of the works written by these women composers and bring them to people’s attention.

About the Composers

Price and Beach each have a unique late-Romantic style, and their stories are truly inspiring.  Florence Price is an African American composer whose works have not been discovered and performed much due to racial and gender discrimination. Price made considerable use of characteristic African-American melodies and rhythms in many of her works. Beach, even though she was one of the first successful women composers, also had many restrictions during her lifetime due to gender. Her name would be listed on concert programs and published compositions as "Mrs. H. H. A. Beach." Her marriage to a Boston surgeon, Dr. Henry Harris, Aubrey Beach was conditioned upon her willingness "to live according to his status, that is, function as a society matron and patron of the arts. She agreed never to teach piano, an activity widely associated with women." Currently, Liliya is working on the violin & piano sonata to reflect and bridge these past works of Price and Beach in her own language.
