William Chip, B.A. '71, J.D. '79

I received my Yale B.A. in 1971, having been double-privileged by participation in two years of Directed Studies and two years of Political Science & Economics. (In four years I never attended a class with more than a dozen students!) I subsequently spent two years as a Mellon Fellow at Clare College, Cambridge University, where I met my wife at a ballroom dancing class! After serving three years in the Marine Corps, I attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1979.Before college, I was raised as a “military brat” by a Dad who served as a Marine Corps officer in WWII , Korea, and Vietnam. From kindergarten through the 10th grade, I was educated by nuns and brothers at Catholic schools., and I remain a practicing Catholic. Whether somebody else chooses a different or no religion is none of my business, but I oppose setting aside two millennia of Christian thought as we reshape modern civilization. If you're looking for a "woke" candidate, I'm not your guy! After law school, I spent 40 years practicing international tax law, retiring from Covington & Burling LLP in 2019. (I subsequently served through the end of the Trump Administration as Senior Counselor to the Secretary of Homeland Security. ) During my professional career, I had the privilege of serving as pro bono counsel to a number of religious and immigration-reform organizations as well as assisting needy individuals through the Washington Archdiocesan Legal Network. If elected to the Board, I would focus on how the Club might advance freedom of thought at our alma mater, while recollecting the many beautiful memories that we alumni have in common.

Helena Chung, M.A. '00

Greetings members of the Yale alumni community! My name is Helena Chung, and I’d like to serve on the Yale Club of Washington, DC’s Board of Directors because of my passion to build up local Washington DC Yale community and activate a healthcare/public health-oriented Yale “mission team” that will serve our local communities in aftermath of devastating pandemic. In this year and beyond, we will live with the new normal of the COVID pandemic but we as Yale community should take up the charge to apply our academic and professional trainings and experiences to serve the communities that have been devastated by the pandemic. Therefore I’d like to hear the pulse of the individuals representing our alumni network and explore opportunities to activate a healthcare/public health-oriented Yale mission teams that will serve our DC community with our talents and time. I envision a world where communities like Yale Club, representing the diverse talents and experiences, will help foster innovative ways to cause synergistic effects and positive externalities that will create value for our Washington DC communities. In my current professional life as Oncology Director at AstraZeneca, I have depth and breadth of experiences mobilizing teams and activating engagement and collaborations between multiple stakeholders in addition to my cancer research and marketing competencies built at AZ. My passion is bringing diverse groups of people and forming teams and alliances that create value that transcends sum of equal parts. I would be very honored to serve on the Yale Club of Washington, DC's Board of Directors to provide my leadership towards taking our Club through post-pandemic era to cause innovative healthcare capacity-building “mission teams” to Washington DC community and beyond. Thank you very much for consideration of my candidacy. Helena Chung linkedin.com/in/helenayonhee
Andrew Craig, B.A. '14

As a Yale alum, I would love to serve on the Board of the Yale Club of DC because I am passionate about giving back to the Yale community, which has been transformative in my own life. I attended Yale on full scholarship (thanks to generous alums), graduating in 2014 with academic honors. Since then, I have met many alums who have taken an interest in me: they have done informational interviews, given honest feedback, and provided much needed emotional encouragement. Their involvement has been invaluable and helped me launch a career in media. If elected to serve on the Board, I would pay forward the support I received to current and future Yale students. My focus would be on creating opportunities for mentorship, networking, professional development, and community service. I have extensive experience in this. From 2014 to 2020, I was heavily involved in developing programs for a foundation in Denver that gives scholarships, mentorship, internships, and professional development coaching to young black men pursuing higher education. This foundation has touched the lives of more than 100 black men and helped them blossom into high-achieving young professionals. I also have some experience in leading community service projects for Yale alums. In 2015, for example, I organized a College Readiness Assembly for inner city middle school students through the Yale Club of Chicago. I would love to draw upon all of this experience to further the work that the Yale Club of DC is doing to give back. Thank you so much for considering my candidacy and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sashka Dimitrievska, Ph.D., SOM, M.Phil '13

I enjoyed New Haven and Yale University, sufficiently to stay for three degrees spanning the medical school, engineering school and business school (SOM). My time at Yale allowed me to be part of more than just the student associations that visited GIPSY but also the Howard Hughes medical Institute (HHMI), Advanced Graduate leadership Program (AGLP) and lastly YEI (Yale Entrepreneurial Institute)- where early stage startups were spun out of Yale. I kept my sanity of academic endeavors by spending as much time away from experiments and classes at Payne Whitney in the graduate and intramural volleyball leagues, where we continued explorations of the local pizzas…My terminal PhD degree from Yale in ‘15 from Biomedical Engineering, put me out of green covered Yale fields and into the healthcare working world. I have traded my academic endeavors of patents, book and publications for now a global pharma organization that I head up for AstraZeneca. While I enjoy some of the current challenges that my global department at AstraZeneca tacks daily, I do find myself missing a community where various topics are discussed as we did at Yale. I am now applying to join the board as I have joined a few Yale DC events and found the scientific and clinical driven field to be less present at the Yale DC club and events. Whist the DC area caters less to healthcare than law- expand the Yale DC membership to also include more scientists, clinicians, and healthcare folks would more accurately represent the wonderful diversity DC offers from Yalies. I hope the current board is open to entertaining this idea and possibly further discussing it. Best, Sashka

Gaston Gelos, Ph.D. '98

I would be thrilled to serve on the Board, where I would seek to bring in both my international experience, and my perspective as a graduate alumnus. A dual German/Uruguayan citizen, I have lived in four countries, although I’ve spent most of my time in DC since obtaining my Ph.D. in 1998. I continue to be engaged with the university through recruiting, participation in events and workshops, and by giving occasional lectures. Most recently, I participated in a Yale Career Panel for graduate students. I would like to contribute in efforts to expand and diversify the Club’s membership further, reaching out in particular to groups that are still relatively underrepresented. I believe that my long experience in working on global policy issues in a multilateral institution, in a multicultural environment, as well as my experience in diplomacy and public outreach would be assets in this regard. I would also like to contribute to strengthening mentoring and career advice efforts, thinking of new ways to engage with younger graduates. In addition, I highly value the social aspect of the Club and the unique opportunities it offers to meet interesting people from different spheres, and attending events should always be fun!

Aeden Ghebreselassie, M.S.N. '12

My name is Aeden Ghebreselassie and I am running for a seat on the Yale Club of Washington, DC’s Board of Directors. After quite a year, it is clear that the Yale Community must remain connected now more than ever. I graduated from Yale School of Nursing in 2012 as a Family Nurse Practitioner. I have been working in healthcare in various roles for 15 years. I previously lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and attended Yale Club of Pittsburgh events. I have lived in the area now for 5 years and am looking to get more involved in my community. I previously was a Yale University cheerleader. I have enjoyed returning to Yale after graduation to attend The Game and spend time with fellow Yalie alums. I have participated in the Yale Day of Service, as well as participating in other acts of service (including with GenR-an affiliate of the International Rescue Committee). As an African-American woman and a first generation American, I am committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the greater Yale community. With passion and motivation, I seek to help represent the interests of the Yale Club of Washington, DC. I look forward to spending time with you all in the future and would appreciate your vote. Thank you for your consideration.

Lauren Harris, B.A. '14

Greetings, fellow Yale Club of DC members and Yale Alumni! My name is Lauren Harris, and I am a proud Yale College Class of 2014 alumna. From a humble background, I fulfilled my dream of earning a world-class education at Yale. I graduated with high honors and was selected by the college speak at commencement. You may watch my speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypjAzjVMaZ8&t=90m45s At Yale, I formed close bonds with my peers, professors and deans that I will forever cherish. For all of these reasons, I enthusiastically write to express my desire to serve on the board and do all I can to help the Yale Club of Washington fully embraced its mission to provide a thriving community of Yalies and serve the Washington DC area.During my time at Yale, I worked tirelessly on many community-focused organizations, which I have listed below. My most meaningful experience was serving as Community Action chair for my college. A proud Stilesian, I helped organize and serve the local community by cooking and serving food to the needy as well collecting warm coats and garments for New Haven's homeless population. I also helped collect and distribute professional clothing to the City's homeless and poor to support their entry into the workforce. As the Senior Community Service leader at Dwight Hall at Yale- Center for Social Justice and Social Service and a Big-Sib, I raised funds for our student-led, campus service clubs and helped welcome incoming freshmen to the rigors and joys of Yale. After graduating, I joined First Data, the nation's leading financial technology company, focusing on providing excellence in payment software to the federal government. There, I have received numerous awards for my leadership, tenacity, organizational ability, as well as my devotion to ensure that my clients enjoy secure payment systems and industry best practices. I would be honored, humbled, positively overjoyed to bring my talents, experience, and enthusiasm to serving the Yale Club of DC.Yale Service and Acknowledgements: Dwight Hall Distinguished Leadership Award-Awarded to the Yale senior who has made a major impact on Dwight Hall activities throughout his or her Yale career. I received my B.A. from Yale in Political Science, 2014. As you learned above I was an active leader in the Yale community serving on several student-run boards in addition to fundraising work for Dwight Hall at Yale, the largest campus-based student-run service organization in the country. I was very honored to receive the Bernard Osher Scholarship in recognition for my academic achievements, and deeply grateful to Yale for encouraging me to reach far beyond what I had thought possible. Deeply committed to promoting the values of Yale, I have created a number of new initiatives during my time on the Board. Most recently, leading an effort to support Yale alumni performing artists during the pandemic. Committed to promoting ways to engage area alumni through programming this past year has been truly enriching. I aspire to bring my commitment to social justice to her role at the club, and to meet our strategic goals of providing an inclusive community to serve all alumni. My professional responsibilities include program management of 36+ federal agencies for Fiserv. A lifelong pianist, I currently enjoy trying to beat my VO2 max uptake on my bike, reading, and long walks with a certain black Lab. I hope to have the opportunity to continue to serve on the Board and to bring my passion of service to grow new initiatives. Thank you for taking the time to read a little about me, and hope to see you soon in one of our, for now, virtual meetings! Sincerely, Lauren Harris ‘14

Roy Niedermayer, B.A. '69

For over 20 years, I have deeply active in and committed to the Yale Club of Washington, D.C. as an organization that not only serves the goals and interests of Yale University and her diverse alumni in the Washington Metropolitan Area, but makes a difference in the DMV through our Club participation and service to the larger community. In this endeavor, I have devoted substantial time to the Club and its educational and service activities. Those pursuits include serving as past President and Treasurer of the Club and being an active Board member for many years; acting as a Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region for the YAA’s and the Club’s Day of Service and serving as the Club's delegate to the Annual Yale Alumni Association Assembly; chairing the program of Community Service Awards to inner city high school students and being the Alumni Schools Coordinator for Montgomery County for over 15 years supervising the interviews of over 5,250 Yale applicants. From 2013-2016, I was a Member of the YAA Board of Governors as well as the chair of the Yale Medal Committee, Washington D.C. liaison/board member for the Yale Alumni College and on the Board of Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange. As a present Board member, I have provided pro bono advice and legal services to the Club, including participation in maintenance of its charitable status and the recent redrafting of its corporate Bylaws.Part of my role at the Club has been the active developer and promoter of Club programming. Thus includes the production of the Club’s YAA award winning, annual 4-day educational Civil War travel tours led and taught by Yale scholars to Gettysburg and the 1864-65 Virginia campaigns of Grant and Lee. During my Club and Board participation, Organizing Club events, ranging from college admission presentations for college-bound students and parents, wine tastings, “how to network” programs for young alums, and opera lectures with young Yale composers, has also been part of my responsibilities. Most recently, I promoted a virtual art lesson for 6-12 year old Alumni children with a recognized local artist. I am particularly interested in promoting programs for lesser programmatically-served Yale families with young and older children, with a focus on senior/grandparent-younger children/family interaction.Working with current Board members and officers, I hope to continue as a Board member to use my wide-ranging experience gained through prior involvement at the Club and University levels, my proven commitment to maintain the best of the Club and my resources as a native Washingtonian to chart a vision for the Club that fulfills all of our mutual interests and the spirit of service leadership imbued in us at Yale. Along the way, I have also had some time to pursue my career as a commercial, trust and estates trial lawyer and raise my family, including a Yale ’06 graduate.

We are currently experiencing one of the most interesting and important periods of environmental policy definition in the past fifty years. Many would point out that this is coming none too soon since we are facing a time of global existential threat associated with climate change. The Biden Administration has, in its first months in office, initiated key actions in virtually all of the relevant departments and agencies. The proposed policy changes would transform some of America’s core industries including the electric power industry, the automobile industry, the oil and gas industry and others. With the proposals that have already been made, this is a process that is to take place within 10 years. The Yale Club of Washington has had some exceptional programs in this area. There is an opportunity to create even more.I came to Washington from Yale and then Harvard Business School to help create the Environmental Protection Agency and in subsequent years, as a management consultant and government executive and contributor to public policy making, have returned to energy and environmental policy multiple times. Few times in history have equaled the present in terms of the opportunity to learn and potentially to contribute.I have always been impressed with the Yale Club’s ability to create powerful educational programs and bring in interesting speakers especially from Yale itself. In recent months, Yale Blue Green and other groups and schools from Yale as well as Washington based alumni from the University have become even more accessible virtually. But it takes work to create the programs. I taught an Energy Policy course at the Yale School of Management and was impressed then that there were even more opportunities to bring interesting voices from Yale to the Yale Club of Washington. If by joining the Board it’s possible to help to organize future programs in this area and others, I would like to volunteer to help.

Brendan Sullivan, B.A. '16

Hi Everyone! I’m excited for the opportunity to potentially join the board and meet all of you. Although I’m from Massachusetts originally, I’ve grown to love DC and now call the district my home. My sister works as an ER doctor at GW and my parents recently moved to the area so the whole family could be together. In addition to having my family close by, I’ve grown to love the social scene, work opportunities, and vibrant culture that DC offers. After graduating from Yale, I moved to NY to take a position on an investment team at Goldman Sachs. In 2019, I moved to DC to join a new digital marketing consulting firm that works with clients in the government, transportation, and financial space. Currently, I’m in the process of launching a new mental health/wellness company in the DC area and have enjoyed meeting with other local entrepreneurs and investment professionals interested in the healthcare space.Having played sports all my life and formerly serving as the captain of Yale’s Track & Field team are a testament to my love for sports, healthy competition, and teamwork. As a new member of the board, I’d love to assist with expanding its membership and social opportunities by supporting its financial, communications, and marketing efforts. Whether it’s via sports leagues, happy hours, speaker series, or other outlets, I look forward to helping facilitate and strengthen connections amongst our community.

Rosita Thomas, Ph.D. '87

I am thrilled to submit my application to serve on Yale Club of DC’s Board of Directors. Like many of you, I am an enthusiastic, dedicated, lifetime Yalie.I received my Ph.D. in political science, with an emphasis on American government and public policy, from Yale University. In addition, I did post-graduate work at Harvard's JFK School of Government and received my B.A. from Duke University. I am a 1stGen college graduate and live in Woodbridge, VA. I run a full-service opinion research firm primarily focusing on public health and diversity, equity, and inclusion issues. I also volunteer at a local non-profit focused on mental health recovery. The last two of my three daughters graduated from college this past December. My passions also include traveling, gardening, food, shopping, mentoring, and making people laugh. In December 2019, my 5 year tenure on the Yale Graduate School Alumni Association Board (GSAA) ended and shortly thereafter the pandemic started. Since then, other than connecting with my family and friends, I have most missed being part of the Yale Alumni volunteer community. My more recent Yale Alumni volunteer experience includes:•Yale Graduate School Alumni Association Board (3-year term, plus an additional year as an officer and one as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Liaison representative). During my tenure, I served as served on the Nominating Committee, was an officer, and helped represent and engage current Graduate Students and Graduate School Alumni. Annually, we hosted a 2-day conference in New Haven called, Where Do I Go From Yale. (2015-2019)•Yale Executive Directors Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Working Group (1-year appointment). Conducted online survey with Yale Alumni to provide insight on how to better engage underrepresented populations in Yale Clubs/Groups and to implement best practices for building diverse leadership pipelines for all YAA’s Clubs and Groups. (2018)•Yale Alumni Diversity and Inclusion Task Force (2-year appointed position). We researched and wrote a best-practices and recommendations report, which was presented to Yale Leadership in 2018. A smaller group of us conducted & analyzed an online survey with Yale Alumni Leadership about participation and representation at Alumni activities, which helped inform our main report. (2017) •Other alumni interests: As a GSAA member, I helped organize and co-hosted an event in DC on increasing local Yale Alumni involvement with non-profits working to address food insecurity. I’ve also became acquainted with and worked with several members of the Yale Club of DC.

2021 By-Laws Revision Vote

The Yale Club of Washington, DC By-Laws have not been updated since 2012.  The Board of Directors has developed and voted to submit a new revised set of By-Laws to the full membership, with a vote for adoption. The major changes included in this proposed revision are:

Thank you to Chip Seward ’65 for leading this important effort.  The Board intends to evaluate additional areas of the By-Laws for revision next fiscal year, but we believe that the proposed revision is a significant improvement.  We ask for membership approval to adopt them.
